OFCC Sues City of Cleveland Heights, Ohio The sign you see here is posted in Cleveland Heights Parks implying possession of a firearm is a crime. On Friday August 12th, 2011 Ohioans For Concealed Carry Filed a lawsuit against the City the City of Cleveland Heights. The litigation comes after many attempts to resolve concerns over laws that Cleveland Heights not only allowed to remain on their books, but also posted signs at their parks that continue to imply it is illegal to be armed. The City of Cleveland Heights has chosen to ignore our attempts at civil discourse. When individuals have contacted them representing themselves as residents of the City of Cleveland Heights their concerns apparently fell on deaf ears. When representatives of the organization have formally contacted the city's legal representation they've been laughed at and hung up on by the Law Director. It is this arrogance and refusal to work with Ohioans For Concealed Carry that has forced us to seek a remedy through the courts.
Our press release follows.

Anti-Gun Letter in the Beacon Journal

It seems we have a new foe in town. Toby Hoover, Director of the Ohio Coalition Against Gun Violence is implying that those of us who believe in our constitutional rights are responsible for gun violence. You can read the letter by reading on, or look for it on The Beacon Journal website. Want to respond? Letters to the Editor go here. "Concealed weapons are a danger"

Why have major Ohio law enforcement officials opposed a proposed Ohio concealed-carry law that would allow individuals to carry around loaded handguns?

The experience in states that allow people to walk and drive around with handguns is not something that Ohio wants to emulate.

Studies in Florida and Texas, conducted by the Violence Policy Center of Washington, D.C., show that many individuals with criminal records are able to obtain concealed-carry permits in those states.

Furthermore, many people who obtain permits to carry handguns end up committing crimes. Indeed, some people who commit felonies are able to slip through the cracks and retain valid permits to carry handguns.

Allowing anyone to walk with or drive around with a loaded handgun doesn't reduce crime. In fact, it may increase it.

A study in Texas shows that from 1996 to 1999, concealed handgun-license holders were arrested for weapon-related offenses at a rate 66 percent higher than that of the general population of Texas in the 21 years and older range.

In the mid-1900s, a study showed that states with no or extremely limited carry-concealed laws saw a 24.8 percent drop in crime.

States with permissive concealed-carry laws experienced only an 11.45 percent drop.

Why risk Ohio's public safety by passing a concealed-carry law? A recent report by the Dayton Daily News revealed that we are a major state for gun trafficking.

In an editorial, the Daily News said, ``The Ohio legislature should take swift and firm action to end the state's dubious status as a busy intersection on the gun-running superhighway.''

The paper deplored the legislature's effort ``to legalize the reckless policy of carrying concealed weapons in public.''

We owe it to our young people to be role models for safety.

What are they to think if adults are carrying loaded handguns in their cars and into public places?

What kind of a message are we sending them about their security? We need to increase their comfort level, not their level of fear. Why put the families and children of Ohio at risk?

On behalf of our children, we strongly urge our state legislature to stand strong for law enforcement and not pass a concealed-carry law.
