UHHS Nurse attacked, raped, and robbed in hospital ''NO GUNS'' zone

A Cleveland television station reported that a nurse apparently walking back to a parking garage was attacked last night:

A University Hospitals nurse was attacked, raped and robbed as she walked behind the Wolstein Research Center around 9:30 p.m. The victim was on her way to her car at the time of the attack.

Interestingly enough, police are advocating the very self-defense tactics that this organization would recommend, including situational awareness and having a self-defense weapon:

Police are warning others that have to walk to their cars at night to always be aware of their surroundings. Lt. Tom Stacho suggested walking in groups if possible, staying in well-lit areas, have a weapon, such as car keys, at the ready, and be ready to scream or run in case of danger.

Everytime a hospital posts a sign prohibiting lawfully licensed individuals from carrying firearms for self-defense they "justify" it with a self-proclaimed need to create a safer environment for their patients and employees.

The safer environment might be for rapists.

In the most recent case on the UHHS and CWRU campus the hospitals prohibitive actions have proven yet again to tip the scale in favor of those who intend to take or do whatever they please.

Unfortunately for the victim of this attack, and quite frankly to the benefit of the attacker, University Hospitals and nearly every other hospital in the State of Ohio has posted "NO Guns" signs in their parking decks, at their doorways, entrances, etc.

Just about everywhere that a potential rape victim might need to traverse in their daily course of coming and going to work is a "Criminal Protection Zone" or CPZ, and the obvious signs posted at every parking garage elevator entrance make it clear to would be criminals that victims are ripe for the picking -- all the law abiding people here are disarmed for your enjoyment.

All across Ohio there have been incidents of women being attacked in parking garage stairways. The concept of "walking together" is quite frankly impractical most of the time when arriving at work.

One has to ask just how practical it is for a level one trauma center full of employees to have unarmed guards escort each of them to their cars individually. Just how many guards would it take?

In this case, the attacker was found by police just one block away riding a bike. Fortunately for the victim she survived the attack itself, but now she has to deal with reliving the event in court and the mental consequences of not being able to defend herself in that one moment in time for the rest of her life.

Ask yourself this: Would you or your wife ever walk behind the Wolstein Research Center again?

For the safety of the patients and employees hospitals should seriously reconsider these ill advised strategies before someone -- maybe a patient next time, is attacked again.
