OFCC Sues City of Cleveland Heights, Ohio The sign you see here is posted in Cleveland Heights Parks implying possession of a firearm is a crime. On Friday August 12th, 2011 Ohioans For Concealed Carry Filed a lawsuit against the City the City of Cleveland Heights. The litigation comes after many attempts to resolve concerns over laws that Cleveland Heights not only allowed to remain on their books, but also posted signs at their parks that continue to imply it is illegal to be armed. The City of Cleveland Heights has chosen to ignore our attempts at civil discourse. When individuals have contacted them representing themselves as residents of the City of Cleveland Heights their concerns apparently fell on deaf ears. When representatives of the organization have formally contacted the city's legal representation they've been laughed at and hung up on by the Law Director. It is this arrogance and refusal to work with Ohioans For Concealed Carry that has forced us to seek a remedy through the courts.
Our press release follows.

Canton PD Event Leads to New OFCC Legislation When officer Harless of the Canton, Ohio police department came upon a vehicle stopped in the roadway most of us were focused on getting restaurant carry legislation signed into law. What took place that evening has become an international viral video, calls for the resignation of the City Council president, and criminal charges against a man who is clearly heard trying to state that he has a license. Ohioans For Concealed Carry has not just raised thousands of dollars in a legal defense fund, but we've written legislation to resolve this matter that Representative Danny Bubp has stated he's going to introduce this fall Read the Full Story

HB347 - Hello? Is the news media out there?

Yesterday afternoon marked the second day of proponent testimony for HB347 in the Criminal Justice Committee, and new faces appeared before the committee to address their concerns.

Today, just like a week ago, its as if the New Media in Ohio is sticking it's thumbs in it's ears and completely ignoring these hearings. Where there would once be an Associate Press story the evening of the hearings recounting the testimony, there is nothing. Where there would be the usual extreme anti-gun laced articles, there are simply none.

Are they waiting for opponent testimony, or have we finally made it clear that this issue really isn't as controversial as they wish it was? (If you find a story online, please tell us: Contact Us Form)

Included in those testifying was Bruce Beatty, known for his case against the City of Toledo for arresting him in a Toledo park while carrying a concealed firearm. Beatty's case remains in the Court of Appeals.

Beatty, who was en route to Columbus Tuesday afternoon, apparently pulled off the road to take a nap. Then, according to Beatty, he awoke to a .40 Glock handgun being pointed at him as a Springfield Police officer knocked on his window and ordered him to show his hands. It remains unclear if someone reported him or the police stumbled upon his vehicle.

Beatty's handgun was holstered, in plain sight, in a shirt pocket. Needless to say the four responding officers eventually let him continue his journey to the Statehouse, where he presented this ironic and timely story to a well received Criminal Justice Committee hearing testimony in favor of eliminating open carry requirements.

We're also thrilled to report that another member of OhioCCWForums.org made it to the hearing just in time to present testimony in favor of HB347, but in opposition to the citizenship regulations. Unlike last week's hearings, the committee actually asked questions of witnesses this time.

NEXT TUESDAY: It is very likely that next Tuesday will be an opponent hearing for HB347. OFCC wants to staff these hearings with as many pro-gun blue shirt wearing supporters as possible. We are also looking for correspondents who can attend, take notes on each opponent speaker, and report on the hearing by telephone shortly after its's completion. If you'd like to do this, please use our Contact Us Form to send a message to Jeff Garvas.
