OFCC Sues City of Cleveland Heights, Ohio The sign you see here is posted in Cleveland Heights Parks implying possession of a firearm is a crime. On Friday August 12th, 2011 Ohioans For Concealed Carry Filed a lawsuit against the City the City of Cleveland Heights. The litigation comes after many attempts to resolve concerns over laws that Cleveland Heights not only allowed to remain on their books, but also posted signs at their parks that continue to imply it is illegal to be armed. The City of Cleveland Heights has chosen to ignore our attempts at civil discourse. When individuals have contacted them representing themselves as residents of the City of Cleveland Heights their concerns apparently fell on deaf ears. When representatives of the organization have formally contacted the city's legal representation they've been laughed at and hung up on by the Law Director. It is this arrogance and refusal to work with Ohioans For Concealed Carry that has forced us to seek a remedy through the courts.
Our press release follows.
Canton PD Event Leads to New OFCC Legislation When officer Harless of the Canton, Ohio police department came upon a vehicle stopped in the roadway most of us were focused on getting restaurant carry legislation signed into law. What took place that evening has become an international viral video, calls for the resignation of the City Council president, and criminal charges against a man who is clearly heard trying to state that he has a license. Ohioans For Concealed Carry has not just raised thousands of dollars in a legal defense fund, but we've written legislation to resolve this matter that Representative Danny Bubp has stated he's going to introduce this fall

AP Article Attempts to Minimize the Gun-Owner Vote PDF Print E-mail

This Associated Press story will likely appear in Sunday papers across the State of Ohio: 'God, guns, gays' a stretch for average voters

Julie Carr Smyth, a Statehouse reporter in Columbus with the Cleveland Plain Dealer, attempts to make the case that the hot button items in the title of her story are less important than the candidates appear to be making them. She even quoted Ohio's leading anti-gun extremist in the article:
Toby Hoover, executive director of the Ohio Coalition Against Gun Violence, says all the posturing on wedge issues leaves many topics of greater importance to voters unaddressed.

"What I find fascinating is that our candidates seem to be competing for who's more gun-friendly, and that seems absurd when that's not up there in the concerns of the majority of people," she said.
Could it be that Hoover is just upset that neither Gubernatorial candidate is towing the anti-gun line, including the Democrat?

The most ironic aspect of this article comes from a final paragraph quoting Hoover.
Hoover believes that trend is fueled by fear.

"They scare people with these hot-button issues. Whether you care a lot about one of those issues is not really the point," she said. "If I can make you be afraid of one of these issues - they're going to take your guns away, or gay marriage is going to be everywhere - then I can guide your vote. It's always about fear." Since when is Hoover's camp not responsible for pandering fear, to the news media, about firearms in the hands of law abiding citizens?
Despite being a "coalition against gun violence" Hoover's group has law abiding gun owners in her sights every time she visits the Ohio Statehouse. Hoover draws an income from the OCAGV as it's director and attends pro-gun legislation hearings to oppose those bills. Where is she in seeking change that would go after hardened criminals who use firearms inappropriately?

When neither candidate is backing your position it seems logical to want them to talk about anything but your topic. If Strickland was talking about banning guns Hoover's quotes would undoubtedly be much different.

The stakes are high in Ohio, and 70,000+ licensed concealed handgun owners represents the fact that an unheard of number of gun owners who didn't seek a license exist, and they vote.
National Rifle Association spokesman Andrew Arulanandam called gun rights a mainstream issue. He said far more Ohioans own guns than concealed-carry and hunting statistics would indicate - and gun owners vote.

"What matters to politicians are votes on Election Day, and what we have is a voting bloc that's savvy, that's committed, and - based on empirical evidence - that will go out and vote on Election Day," he said. "That's why politicians pay attention to gun owners."
Recently we pointed out that the Strickland campaign appears to be targeting gun owners via email, and when called by OFCC they stated that gun owners and "Second Amendment" concerns are important to their campaign. While its a refreshing position from a Democrat seeking statewide office in Ohio the selection of Lee Fisher as candidate for Lt. Governor has many questioning the campaign's commitment.

On the flip side nearly twenty people from the campaign for Ken Blackwell sought out Ohioans For Concealed Carry's assistance in obtaining the course and range time required to apply for a concealed handgun license. A long term member of OFCC and the Board of Directors provided that training earlier this month.

The fact is, as the NRA put it, Ohio is chock-full of gun owners and gun owners vote. Dismissing such a powerful voting bloc as unimportant is how elections are lost.
