Five years ago today, then Ohio Governor Bob Taft signed House Bill 12 into law, effectively ending Ohio's 145 year ban on concealed carry. Ninety days later on April 8, 2004, Ohio sheriffs began accepting applications for the new licenses. Since then, well over 100,000 Ohioans have taken advantage of the program and obtained a concealed handgun license. These last five years have proven how safe CHL holders can be, and numerous lives have been saved when victims of violent criminal attacks were able to effectively fight back and prevail. Since that day, numerous improvements have been made to Ohio's gun laws, and we still have a long way to go. But HB12 started it all, which makes it special to all pro-gun activists in Ohio.
