Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray has released the 2008 annual report for concealed handgun licenses issues for that year.

Cordray notes that Ohio sheriffs issued 33,864 CHLs last year, a jump of 53 percent from 2007 and the second highest year on record, and has issued 142,732 since the program began in 2004.

2008 marked the third straight year with an increase in applicants, which can be attributed to many factors including reported success of the program, improved CHL laws, decreased negativity from the media, fewer instances of CHL lists being printed in the paper or online, and fears of increasing crime due to the faltering economy and reports of law enforcement layoffs.

Franklin county lead the way with 2,044 new licenses issued. Rounding out the top ten were Lake (1,681), Summit (1,528), Hamilton (1,402), Butler (1,391), Medina (1,337), Clermont (1,287), Warren (1,007), Trumbull (987), and Montgomery (962). Paulding county came in last place with only 19 licenses issued.
