Columbus: Third defensive use of a pistol in less than seven days. PDF Print E-mail

The number of concealed handgun licenses issued in Ohio during 2009 was the most ever since concealed carry was enacted nearly six years ago, exceeding fifty-six thousand for the year. This raises the question: Will the increased number of law abiding gun owners carrying firearms result in a more obvious use of those weapons for self defense?

In the past week we've seen two legitimate uses of a handgun out of Toledo for self-defense against career criminals, in a rare 48 hour period.  In both cases gun shots were exchanged between the robbery victims and the criminal.  One suspect died of his wounds while customers and store owners escaped uninjured in both shootings.

Early Tuesday morning, the day after the second Toledo shooting, a third documented case of self-defense took place in Columbus, and 10TV News is covering the story with video.

According to Erick Tehoke he was sitting in his SUV at an ATM when a man approach and demanded his money.  Tehoke instintively drew his defensive pistol and never fired a shot, proving a claim this organization has made since our inception:  Crimes can be deterred without a shot being fired, and they won't be documented by law enforcement statistics.  Tehoke states in the video on 10TV's website that after drawing his firearm he realized his attacker was displaying no weapons and the perceived threat de-escalated in more ways that one.

Tehoke's attempted robbery suspect promptly fled the scene, and everyone went home safe that night.

Make would-be Tea Party leaders prove they support Second Amendment PDF Print E-mail

We talked yesterday about a new national "conservative" group founded by the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, and I raised concerns about automatically aligning the liberty movement with prominent members of the Republican Party establishment. After all, if the GOP as a whole had been championing republican, that is, Constitutional values all along, we'd hardly need a "Tea Party" movement, would we?

That the establishment worries the growing freedom movement may siphon off votes to deny them power is evident—no less a leadership luminary than former MA governor/GOP presidential nomination contender Mitt Romney is out there telling those enraged by betrayal that whatever you do, don't vote third party. Romney, who signed a ban on semiautomatic firearms while governor, would rather have us support someone like, say, semiautomatic firearm ban bill author Mark Kirk, than jump ship.

I've witnessed the growing anger as more and more Americans are waking from a long slumber and becoming aware of the scope of government abuse and interference in their lives. It's great to see happening. Unfortunately, I also see ways in which the phenomenon is being derailed and even hijacked.

In spite of good intentions and passion, many of the newly active have not been studying the issues long enough or deeply enough to claim more than a surface understanding. This renders them particularly vulnerable to savvy demagogues, those who know the system and who know how to manipulate others to get what they want, that is, pros who have been doing it for years.

You know, politicians.

Ohio Senate Bill 239 Introduced PDF Print E-mail

Today Senators Jones and Schaffer introduced Ohio Senate Bill 239, a pro-gun concealed carry reform bill that in addition to addressing carrying in a Class D establishement or open air arena the legislation also deals with improperly transporting a firearm in a motor vehcile, removing many complicated obligations that limited methods of carrying a firearm - a section of Ohio Law that has created a trap for the unwary and is long overdue to be addressed.   Ohioans For Concealed Carry has been working on a more detailed analysis of the legislation and will update this story shortly with the differences between HB203 and SB239, which is a much more broader approach to permissive carry in a Class D licensed establishment.

This bill has a limited opportunity to get assigned into a committee and have hearings scheduled before Senators head back to their districts for the spring break.   It is very possible that sponsor and proponent testimony hearings could be scheduled before the end of this month.  We encourage our supporters to visit OhioCCW.org this evening for a more detailed analysis of the bill, and contact your Senators asking them to support this legislation.
