OFCC Sues City of Cleveland Heights, Ohio The sign you see here is posted in Cleveland Heights Parks implying possession of a firearm is a crime. On Friday August 12th, 2011 Ohioans For Concealed Carry Filed a lawsuit against the City the City of Cleveland Heights. The litigation comes after many attempts to resolve concerns over laws that Cleveland Heights not only allowed to remain on their books, but also posted signs at their parks that continue to imply it is illegal to be armed. The City of Cleveland Heights has chosen to ignore our attempts at civil discourse. When individuals have contacted them representing themselves as residents of the City of Cleveland Heights their concerns apparently fell on deaf ears. When representatives of the organization have formally contacted the city's legal representation they've been laughed at and hung up on by the Law Director. It is this arrogance and refusal to work with Ohioans For Concealed Carry that has forced us to seek a remedy through the courts.
Our press release follows.
Canton PD Event Leads to New OFCC Legislation When officer Harless of the Canton, Ohio police department came upon a vehicle stopped in the roadway most of us were focused on getting restaurant carry legislation signed into law. What took place that evening has become an international viral video, calls for the resignation of the City Council president, and criminal charges against a man who is clearly heard trying to state that he has a license. Ohioans For Concealed Carry has not just raised thousands of dollars in a legal defense fund, but we've written legislation to resolve this matter that Representative Danny Bubp has stated he's going to introduce this fall

Those of us who enjoy firearms for both self-defense and hunting are a little frustrated. What we are frustrated about is the attitude among some firearms enthusiasts that, “As long as the anti-gunners aren't clamoring to take away my (insert gun of choice), I don't care if they ban (insert boogeyman -- .50cal, 'assault' weapons, etc)”.

Well, now the chickens have come home to roost. I have seen an increase in both tone and substance in “banning firearms that can penetrate body armor”. We know that that includes most deer rifles.

Now this:

Gunman used hunting skills at Omaha mall

The world was stunned by the senseless shootings at the Westroads Mall and we mourn for the families and friends of the victims. While nothing can ease the pain of the survivors, it is time for the firearms industry and Nebraska Game and Parks to take partial responsibility for these wanton acts of violence, since incidents such as these expose the fine line between violence against wildlife and violence against humans.

...

Sadly, the killing skills used by [the killer] are taught to Nebraska's children by the Game and Parks Commission under the guise of "Hunter Education." As long as state agencies conspire with the weapons industry in promoting violence as recreation, senseless killings will always take place.

...

Couple this with the moronic response of people who like this doctor have no problem forgiving the SHOOTER:

Contact U.S. Senators about National Park Carry PDF Print E-mail
Written by Mike Kinsey

There is movement afoot on our long-sought ability to carry in National Parks. As you know, federal law restricts law-abiding citizens from having a firearm there for self defense... even with a valid Concealed Handgun License.

Forty-seven Senators (at the time of the writing) led by Senator Crapo have sent a letter to the Department of the Interior asking for the federal government to leave this decision to the states. Many states do not prohibit carrying in National Forests and other federal lands for which they can make this decision.

Please take a moment to write a letter to Senators Voinovich and Brown either in your own words, or using the sample letter below. Simply copy and paste it into the contact forms at the links provided. Any responses received can be placed in our popular so that we can all be aware of our elected representatives' intentions.

Sample letter:

Dear Senator,

I am urging you to please join Senator Crapo and forty-six of your colleagues (at this point) in writing a letter to the Department of the Interior to allow state law to decide whether law-abiding citizens can carry a firearm for self-defense while visiting National Parks and National Wildlife Refuges. That federal prohibition of our Second Amendment rights on land that we pay for is unjust.

As you know, Ohio Concealed Handgun Licensees are proven good guys that have passed very rigorous background checks, been fingerprinted, and taken approved training. We merely want to be able to defend ourselves from the recent upswing in violence in National Parks and National Wildlife Refuges like we do everywhere else without incident.

I request the favor of a reply regarding your intentions. I will be sharing that reply with thousands of members and supporters of Ohioans For Concealed Carry, Ohio's largest grassroots firearm rights advocacy organization.

Thank you,

Don't Compare Innocent Victims to Criminals PDF Print E-mail
Written by Mike Kinsey

Long-time OFCC member Rick Troha had an excellent letter to the editor published in The Cleveland Plain Dealer yesterday.

Mr. Troha, along with all law-abiding firearm owners, detests when the mainstream media compares innocents to criminals. This is true regarding gun owners, or victims of violence.

Gunshot 'victims' fall into two distinct categories

While my Webster's New World Dictionary agrees with The Plain Dealer that culpability does not exclude one from being labeled a "victim," I still feel there is something inherently wrong in lumping together innocent gunshot victims, who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, with criminals who were shot while committing a crime ("Where do the guns come from?" Sunday). I think it minimizes and detracts from the idea that one should be responsible for the consequences of one's actions.

Party in the Park Recap PDF Print E-mail

On Saturday, September 29th, Ohioans For Concealed Carry held our fourth annual Party in the Park at Liberty Park in Powell, Ohio.

Over 200 people gathered on a beautiful early fall day to enjoy the company of pro-gun activists from across the state.

After feasting on burgers, hotdogs, and BBQ chicken, attendees were paid a visit by Ohio Governor Ted Strickland who worked the crowd before taking the podium to deliver the keynote address. The Governor spoke about the bright future of Ohio, as well as the importance of the citizens' right to Keep and Bear arms.

Also on the speaking docket were Professor Bryan Patrick from the University of Toledo, who spoke about the effectiveness of grassroots activism, Ohio Representative Michael DeBose, who recounted his conversion from anti-CCW to pro-CCW after being mugged, and Attorney Dan Ellis wrapped up with an overview of several legal issues OFCC is involved with.

Overall, this was our most successful, well attended picnic to date and we thank everyone who was able to attend!

Ohioans For Concealed Carry has received confirmation that many across the state have answered our call and contacted their elected representatives for removal of ineffectual and dangerous "No Guns Zones".

During my contact, I requested a written reply of how someone would work to remove "No Guns Zones" from Ohio communities. I made sure to mention that I would share their intentions with our members and supporters. I received an almost immediate reply from Ohio Speaker of the House Jon Husted. His thoughts are given below.

Dear Mr. Kinsey:

I received your e-mail on behalf of Ohioans for Concealed Carry regarding "Gun Free Zones". I appreciate your continued interest in this issue.

Please know that as a law-abiding gun owner myself, I am greatly concerned with any issue facing gun owners' rights in Ohio.
