The extremely rare Class 3 license allows an individual to possess fully automatic firearms and is usually sought by collectors. To obtain a Class 3 license you must supply the BATFE with two photos that are kept on file, pay a $200 tax for the mere privilege per firearm, and have your local law enforcement sign off their permission of you possessing such a firearm.
One individual in Springfield Township went through the process of becoming a lawful owner of an M-60 machine gun only to have it stolen by burglars who clearly targeted him.
Did the news media's facination with releasing the names of gun owners, many who own homes at street addresses readily available via county government property records websites, cause this second large scale theft of privately owned firearms in Northwest Ohio?
WTOL in Toledo reported this incident Tuesday night and included the obligatory full auto video on their website.
"They're awesome weapons. They're war things, relics, trophies," the gun owner said.
At 2 a.m. Tuesday, he noticed the guns were gone. His apartment and trophy case had both been broken into.
"He came home and found his back door kicked in and had a gun safe that had been pried open," said Lucas County Detective Mark Woodruff.
In an impressive move, WTOL-TV in Toledo didn't show the face of the owner, nor did they identify him beyond "the gun owner" or show where he lives. |

Multiple elected County Sheriffs are challenging the statute that defines a journalist or asking various courts to assist them in defining a journalist, and in two cases so far the Sheriffs have named a reporter clearly employed by the Cincinnati Enquirer in their complaints, effectively delaying release of the information to what many would consider the most clear and common sense definition of a journalist.
Last week we told you about our efforts to further raise the awareness of the journalist loophole in an article here, OFCC Raises Awareness of Media Access Loophole, and the saga continues.
Shortly after that story the Cleveland Plain Dealer continued its efforts to follow the requests and our being named in a lawsuit filed by the Clermont County Sheriff Tim Rodenberg (a long-term friend to Gun Owners) and that county's Prosecutor's office. The complaint not only names me (Jeff Garvas) in the case, but also a reporter from the Cincinnati Enquirer, Governor Ted Strickland, and Attorney General Marc Dann.
A similar but somewhat more simple complaint was filed in Mercer County asking the court to determine if the definition of a journalist is met by our request. That case has already had at least one hearing and may be the first to come to a resolution.
It appears that as of Monday, March 26th, Erie County Sheriff Terry Lyons may have filed another complaint in that county naming myself and the same Cincinnati Enquirer Reporter seeking the same exact information. |

The state of Minnesota will now recognize (not reciprocate, see below) an Ohio Concealed Handgun License when Ohioans are within the State of Minnesota. Further, Ohioans For Concealed Carry has requested that the Ohio Attorney General's Office determine if a reciprocity agreement can be reached.
Like most states that recognize another state's license the laws of Minnesota prevail while in Minnesota. You should familiarize yourself when traveling to other states since laws, transportation rules, use of deadly force, and places prohibited vary. Its not uncommon to find places outside of Ohio that allow you to carry your firearm in places where it would be illegal in Ohio, and vice versa.
The Minnesota Department of Public Safety website indicates the recognized states. (see link) In addition to Ohio these states are now recognized by Minnesota: AK, KS, KN, MI, MO, NM, NV, OK,TN and TX
The State of Minnesota is required, by law, to annually "...establish and publish an on-line Internet listing of states, which have handgun carry permit laws that are not substantially similar to Minnesotas law under Minnesota Session Laws..."
The words substantially similar should stand out to those of you who are familiar with Ohio's law since Ohio's Attorney General is required to enter into reciprocity agreements with those states whose requirements are "substantially comparable" to Ohio. According to the State of Minnesota they believe that Ohio's law is substantially similar -- we're not on their list of non-similar states any longer.
Based on this information Ohioans For Concealed Carry has requested the Ohio Attorney General's office pursue reciprocity with Minnesota. Until such an agreement is entered into between both states, and if such an agreement is possible, Minnesota licenses will not be recognized by the State of Ohio.

I have been asked to write an account about my experience in changing managements opinion and policy on posting No Guns signs on the doors at Elyria's Midway Mall in Elyria, OH so others might learn from the way I handled the situation.
I was asked by Daniel White, OFCC Director-At-Large, to verify that the Midway Mall had indeed posted signs on the doors as reported by a member in the forums on the OFCC web site. He asked me if I would be willing to talk to someone about their policy if the doors were in fact posted.
I accepted his request on behalf of the members of OFCC and went to the mall that evening after work. I walked the perimeter of the mall to look at each door and indeed all but one was posted. I then went to the office of the mall but found it to be closed because it was after 5:00 PM.
I then decided this was a good thing because it gave me a chance to prepare what I wanted to say to the mall managers. I then went to the information booth where they rent the strollers and wheel chairs to ask who I might be able to talk to about the signs or someone in public relations. The lady handed me a business card for the assistant manager of the mall.
That night at home I developed my plan of action with the power points that I wished to cover in a meeting with him the next morning

In my own humble opinion, and in the opinion of many smarter than me, the Republican Party absolutely can not win with Rudy Giuliani (or any other anti-gun candidate) as their man in 2008. The GOP needs to re-evaluate what true Conservatives want and run as fast as they can from the mistakes that have been made recently by Republicans in increasing the size and spending of the government to unprecedented levels, skirting the Constitution and the protections that lie therein, and thinking they should be legislating morality.
Instead of returning to the ideals set forth in the Constitution and their "Contract with America" that led them to sweeping victories in the 1990's, they apparently want to offer up middle-of-the road candidates that have a watered down view of what made America the greatest nation in the history of the world. That strategy will never work. The GOP will never draw enough liberal-leaning voters to their side to make up for everyone (like me) that simply can't vote for a non-Conservative Republican.
It is almost universally recognized that Clinton's so-called Assault Weapons Ban and other gun control measures significantly helped the Republicans re-gain power in Washington. Al Gore himself is on record saying that he believes gun owners and the NRA defeated him in 2000. This is why I believe you won't hear much from the Democrats on the third rail issue of gun control until after the Presidential election. Fear not though... once that election has come and gone, we will once again be inundated with anti-gun legislative proposals at both the State and Federal level. That is why it is imperative to have a pro-gun President elected in 2008 that has the will to stand up for the Bill of Rights and our Second Amendment freedoms. |
