How and where do I apply for a license? |

You may apply for a new license at your county Sheriff's office or the Sheriff of any county adjacent to yours. You will need to apply in person, submit an application provided by the Sheriff free of charge (also downloadable from the State Attorney General), provide a photo taken within the past 30 days, an original or photocopy of a certificate of completion of a firearm safety class not more than three years old, indicate that you did read and review the state's pamphlet on deadly force, and pay a fee. You will be required to provide your fingerprints through an electronic device at the Sheriff's office.
You can renew your license beginning 90 days before the expiration date and any time after. Your license remains valid for 30 days after the expiration date. You do not need to renew your license in the county in which it was issued, but you must do so within your home county or an adjacent county. Renewal of a CHL is very similar to the original application process. You must fill out a new application, provide fingerprints, pay the required license fee, and provide proof of recertification of range training (DO NOT bring the original documents, they will be destroyed). For first time renewals, a valid CHL not more than 30 days past its expiration date will serve as proof of training. You must renew with the Sheriff of your county of residence or an adjacent county.
