The Knox Report
From the Firearms Coalition
(August 5, 2008) Once a year for the past 22 years, the leaders of the gun rights movement have come together with some of the nation’s most involved activists to share information, ideas, and inspiration. On September 26, 27, & 28 the movement comes together again for the 23rd annual Gun Rights Policy Conference. This year the theme is “Electing Freedom” and the event is being held in Phoenix, AZ. I want to mention right off the bat that there is no charge to attend GRPC. The Conference and all materials, including a substantial stack of firearms-related books, are absolutely free to all attendees.
Unlike the NRA Convention or SHOT Show where tens of thousands of people gather, GRPC is typically only a few hundred activists and gun rights leaders. Regulars include, Alan Gottlieb, founder of the Second Amendment Foundation and the Citizens’ Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms; Joe Tartaro, Editor of Gun Week newspaper; Chuck Cunningham, Director of Federal Affairs for NRA; scholars, historians, and authors like John Lott, Steven Halbrook, Dave Hardy, Alan Korwin, and Dave Kopel. I’m sure the lawyers from the Heller case, Alan Gura and Robert Levy will be in attendance as will current and former officers of NRA like Sandra Froman and perhaps John Sigler. Wayne LaPierre usually makes a brief appearance too.

Update: Click here for pictures from the event!
The Party in the Park 5 was a huge success! A large crowd of OFCC members and supporters turned out on a beautiful summer day to enjoy the camaraderie, sample the fantastic food, listen to an impressive lineup of speakers, and, of course, win a door prize or two!
From what we heard from the crowd, a fun time was had by all, and the speakers all did an excellent job. It was very informative to hear from the three candidates vying for the Attorney General position, and a special treat to listen to Cam Edwards in person.
In order to ensure they reach the widest audience possible, we are making available the audio recordings of all of the speakers. Click on the name of the speaker below to download an mp3 file.

For the first time, three of the announced candidates for Attorney General in Ohio will appear together to speak to pro-gun activists and supporters at the Fifth Annual Ohioans For Concealed Carry Party in the Park member picnic on Sunday, August. 3rd.
This fall, Richard Cordray(D), Michael Crites (R), and Robert Owens (I) will campaign to replace former AG Marc Dann (D), who resigned amidst scandal in May.
"We are pleased to see these candidates actively seeking the vote of gun owners. The fact that their first appearances together at the same event isn't just a group of gun owners, but this organization, speaks volumes as to how far we have come in making gun owners' voices heard loud and clear in statewide politics," said OFCC President Jeff Garvas.
Recent close elections have highlighted the importance of winning the support of pro-gun voters, not only in Ohio but across the country. |

The Knox Report
From the Firearms Coalition
(July 22, 2008) When David Olofson went to court to fight charges of illegally transferring a machinegun, one of the obstacles he faced was finding expert witnesses to support his position. Olofson’s accusers were from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives – which is the same agency overseeing the firearms industry; licensing dealers, manufacturers, importers, and collectors, etc. Dealing with ATF is a required part of being in the firearms business and it is not good business to get on their bad side, thus industry experts were not lining up in support of Olofson.
Olofson did find an industry expert to stand up for him in court though. Len Savage of Historic Arms, LLC, a designer, manufacturer, and consultant stepped up and testified in Olofson’s behalf. He explained to Olofson’s jury that “hammer follow,” as occurred in Olofson’s rifle, is a relatively common malfunction among semi-auto firearms. He reported that use of M-16 parts in the manufacture of AR-15’s was a very common practice for many years – particularly during the time Olofson’s rifle was made. He testified that guns with more M-16 parts in them than were in Olofson’s have been rejected for registration as machineguns by ATF because, like Olofson’s rifle, they did not have an auto-sear designed to make them full-auto. And Savage discussed the lack of written testing procedures or standards, which leaves much to the discretion – and imagination – of the individual Firearm Enforcement Officers doing the testing.
