The Candidates React to SCOTUS Ruling PDF Print E-mail

"Today’s ruling in District of Columbia v. Heller makes clear that other municipalities like Chicago that have banned handguns have infringed on the constitutional rights of Americans," he says. "Unlike the elitist view that believes Americans cling to guns out of bitterness, today’s ruling recognizes that gun ownership is a fundamental right -- sacred, just as the right to free speech and assembly."

"Today's decision reinforces that if we act responsibly, we can both protect the constitutional right to bear arms and keep our communities and our children safe."

"I have always believed that the Second Amendment protects the right of individuals to bear arms," Obama said, "but I also identify with the need for crime-ravaged communities to save their children from the violence that plagues our streets through common sense, effective safety measures."

U.S. Supreme Court Affirms 2nd Amendment is Individual Right! PDF Print E-mail

A long-awaited opinion has been issued by the U.S. Supreme Court for DC v Heller, which is challenging the unconstitutional ban on handguns and operable longarms in Washington, DC.

Oral arguments were held earlier this year and the Supreme Court has affirmed in a 5-4 decision that the Second Amendment means what it says, it is an individual right, and the DC gun ban is unconstitutional.

While OFCC is relieved that the Supreme Court did not ignore our individual right to keep and bear arms that predates the Constitution, we will be reviewing the entire, lengthy document in order to get a better feel for anything else that the opinion declares.

Please stay tuned to this site for further commentary regarding what this means to law-abiding firearm owners once the opinion has been processed!

The opinion can be found HERE.

2008 First Quarter CHL Statistics (re)Released PDF Print E-mail

We started to write this a week ago, but the CHL statistics from the Ohio AG website disappeared, only to reappear today. The date on the document still reflects last week.

Now that the first round of CHLs have started to expire (remember, they used to only be valid for four years), renewals have caused a workload surge for many sheriff's offices.

The quarterly report shows that 6,834 licenses were issued, and 2,706 renewed. That means over 9,500 people flowed through the 88 sheriff's offices so far this year. We commend the sheriff's for all their work keeping up with the demand for this, one of the most popular state programs.

The Knox Report
From the Firearms Coalition

(June 19, 2008) June 8 of this year was the anniversary of a horrible mass murder and on that day another attack, almost as deadly and just as senseless, took place. On June 8, 2001 a deranged man walked into an elementary school and murdered 8 children and injured 15 other students and school staff members. The more recent attack was aimed at random innocents enjoying a beautiful Sunday in a busy shopping district.

The murderer started his attack by driving into a crowd of shoppers and using his vehicle as a weapon, slamming into panicking pedestrians before leaping out and executing some of the injured. Panicked shoppers tried to flee as the murderer rampaged through the crowds indiscriminately killing and maiming. The final toll was 7 dead and 10 injured.

Unlike many such attacks during which the targets of the attack were trapped inside a relatively small space, this recent outrage took place in the open streets where there was plenty of room to run. Still, that wasn’t enough to save the 17 victims.

A bank robber in Canton, MI, was stopped in his tracks earlier this week by a legally armed Concealed Handgun License holder and his personal firearm.

From 620 WTMJ NewsRadio:
(WXYZ) -- An attempted bank robbery in Canton played out like a scene from a movie Monday when a man who police say claimed to have a bomb was stopped by a customer armed with a pistol.

The drama started just after the Comerica bank on Michigan Ave. opened around 9 a.m. Police say 54-year-old man Joseph Webster from Washtenaw County walked up to a teller and handed her a note claiming he had a bomb strapped to his body.

The fast-thinking teller hit the silent alarm while filling a bag with $1 bills -- until, police say, Webster demanded "bands of 50s and 100s." Another teller saw the situation unfolding and alerted Nabil Fawzi, 39, a long-time customer.

...

He tells WXYZ.com he pulled out a .9 mm handgun (for which he had a CCW permit), racked a bullet in the chamber, pointed it at Webster and announced, "You are not robbing this bank!"

OFCC Member Detained and Harassed for Open Carry PDF Print E-mail
OFCC Members

Bryan Ledford, an Ohioans For Concealed Carry member, was walking down a street in Willowick, OH yesterday when he was ordered to his knees at gunpoint by several police officers. Our member was exercising his right to Keep and Bear Arms by openly carrying a firearm. He did also have a concealed handgun license.

A Willowick Police Sergeant showed up at the scene, and our member was berated by several of the officers over his choice to openly carry, even being told that, "you can't just walk around with your gun exposed" and that he "made a piss-poor decision. It has to be concealed."

As people educated about Ohio law know, there is absolutely nothing illegal about open carry of a firearm in places not prohibited by federal or state law.

Our member recorded the incident (audio is available in .mp3 format at the end of this story), verifying what appears to be numerous incidents of officers displaying an ignorance of the law and possibly civil rights violations.

If nothing else, they were grossly misinformed when threatening to arrest him for disturbing the peace.

Bitter Lies PDF Print E-mail
Opinion

One of these days I expect the Toledo Blade to change its name to something softer, like maybe the Toledo Spoon or Toledo Safety Scissors. Referencing the blade of a knife or sword is just too aggressive sounding for such a liberal, feel-good paper who apparently all believe if we'd just ban all weapons that crime would magically stop and we'd live in a rosy tinted Mr. Roger's neighborhood for the rest of time. Unless I'm missing the point, and they're referring to a lawnmower blade. Well, that still won't work since Karl Childers used one to kill Doyle Hargraves. Seems most anything can be used as a weapon. Could be they mean a blade of grass. I suppose they fancy it means they're on the "cutting edge", but even that seems too violent a reference for them. But, I digress.

This past Saturday, they ran an editorial tearing into Governor Strickland and the Ohio legislature for what they apparently feel was ramming through HB 184 and endangering the safety of the entire state, to hear them tell it.

Of course, the story is so full of lies and half-truths anyone not familiar with the reality of the bill could easily be lead astray.
