Mass Media Reporting Incorrect Information about SB184 Changes PDF Print E-mail
CCW in Print

Reports are coming in via email, phone, and forum postings about the incorrect information being repeated by media outlets regarding the changes to Ohio's CHL laws which go into effect tomorrow, September 9.

The biggest mistake, such as is reported by NewsNet5.com is:
Concealed weapons permit holders can now keep a gun hidden in a car as long as it is in a secure holster worn by the permit holder.

The law previously required the gun to be in plain sight.

This is flat out wrong. It has been legal for a CHL holder to carry a handgun concealed in a motor vehicle for some time now, and the implication that it is just now lawful to conceal a firearm is incorrect and misleading. What has changed is the transportation aspects of the law for firearms in general:

Outdoor Life's The Gun Shots ran a blurb about the storm preparations underway in Louisiana in anticipation of landfall by Tropical Storm Gustav, and relating the observations of charter captain Devline Rossell.
I just left a sporting goods store and you would think that the number-one selling item would be plywood or potable water or gasoline right now,” he said. “Apparently it is AR-15s and .223 ammo. I watched at least 20 people buy AR-15s and cases of .223.

If Gustav becomes a Katrina-like disaster, many residents are determined to not be caught unprepared again. And the eyes of the nation will be on law enforcement officials in the region to ensure they do not violate the rights of the victims by illegally disarming them again.

The Knox Report
From the Firearms Coalition

(August 26, 2008) What if there was a single web site where you could go to learn about the gun rights position of every candidate in every race in every state and federal election in the US? A site where you could find voting records, editorials, and discussion groups of knowledgeable, committed, gun rights activists? A site where local grassroots organizations from all over the country come together to share information and ideas for legislative and electoral success? That web site doesn’t exist, but it could exist. It could be GunVoter.org. We’re not there yet, but we’re working on it. We have the structure in place. The software is operating smoothly. The technical bugs have been worked out and our user base is growing, but we need your help to turn GunVoter.org into the valuable resource that it has the potential to be.

Opinion

I was looking back at some of the gun-related stories from the past week in the news, and several of them struck me as interesting.

Gun-Toting Granny
85-year-old Leda Smith was on "Good Morning America" Thursday to talk about finding a burglar in her house and scaring him off with her gun.

While ABC aired an interview with Smith regarding her experience, NBC devoted a whole 15 seconds to it. As noted in the linked article, similar non-interest from network morning shows was demonstrated in the aftermath of the Heller case, when all three reputedly aired less than four minutes of combined coverage. I can't help but wonder how much airtime would have been devoted had the Supreme Court ruled the other way.

Ohio Attorney General Nancy Rogers' office, partially in response to OFCC's request for assistance, has taken several steps to educate law enforcement officials in Ohio about not only the upcoming changes in Ohio's concealed carry laws (scheduled to go into effect September 9), but also reminding of the fact that open carry is legal in Ohio.

The new Concealed Carry Publication required to be published by the Attorney General is due to be in sheriff's hands by September 8 and will not only cover the changes in the law, but will also contain information about the legality of open carry.

They also will be including open carry information in upcoming continuing education sessions conducted through the Ohio Peace Officers Training Commission, such as the Fall 2008 Ohio Attorney General's Conference on Law Enforcement. These sessions are attended by many police departments in Ohio.

In addition, an article has been written for the August/September issue of The Trainer, a training publication sent to the training division of all police departments in the State. The AG's office has provided OFCC with a copy of this article, which appears below.
