This past weeked on February 17th, 2001 a group of new and old volunteers met at the Brecksville, Ohio branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library. These fine men (and one woman) spent nearly 6 hours qualifying, disqualifying, marking, disputing, mutilating (hehe), and of course counting signatures. The first person to hold a petition up to the light infront of a group of three was escorted out of the building. (just kidding). The totals are in, but we're not going to give them to you in a headline. If you want to see the totals and some digital pictures of the gathering check out this link!. IMPORTANT: This is not the end of the petition drive. Regardless of if you have signed or not please get a copy of the petition and start getting more signatures!

This link to a situational self-defense quiz is very good. It reminds me of a live-fire situational shooting I participated in two years ago. I absolutely love those video projectors with the backstop behind them. You can shoot at the screen (bad guys) and then the system plays back the scenario and highlights where you "hit". It's a great training device primarily used for law-enforcement. Here's a good example of it's tricky power: While watching other students go through the system I memorized the outcome of an event. Anticipating the bad guy drawing on me I shot. However, in my version of the same exact scenario the man had a television remote, not a gun. The ability of these systems to adapt and change the outcome makes them an invaluable training aid.

The NRA website has information on The Right To Carry in 2001 I noticed the NRA lists sources other than their own organization. I gag every time I read HCI quoting VPC. Check out the link and scroll down to "State RTC Permit Statistics" for facts as compiled by the states, not a partisan group.

I hope this law does not happen here in Ohio if we get CCW law: Boulder News (From Colorado). Note: I think Rocket meant to say he hopes the law would pass. CCW reform legislation in Ohio, much like previous legislation, should remove records of qualified permit holders from the public record status. Lawful Ohioans should not be publically "registered" as gun owners to have their names printed in newspapers run by anti-gun editors. The secretive nature of concealed carry legislation is paramount to it's success. Imagine if criminals could look up the permit status of a victim prior to raping, robbing, or killing them?

How will the "Million" Mom March portray this one? A mother of a six year old girl with a felony rap sheet. She had a concealed and loaded firearm in her purse. Clearly, she was barred from possession: Ms. Woodson was convicted of a violent felony charge - aggravated robbery - in 1982 and is not allowed to own or possess a handgun, Detective Ashley Nichols said. Here is the Toledo Blade story on the issue. Should this display of negligent actions by a felon justify the disarming of lawful Ohioans? Of course not. The Toledo Blade is running a story about a six year old girl who may have shot herself in the shoulder Sunday. The firearm was stored in a purse and the child found it while the rest of the family was apparently sleeping. The Ohio Coalition Against Gun Violence will likely speak out against this (being based in Toledo), but they'll fail to realize this is not an issue of violence. The mother should be charged with Ohio's existing laws regarding endangering your children and the child should have been taught the eddie eagle theory in school, even if they didn't associate it with the NRA. Unfortunately, this tragic incident will instead be used to champion taking away more rights from the law abiding and responsible gun owners.
