From the Dayton Daily News two calls to 911 did not save these lives.
"I had no weapon,'' Myers said. ``If I did I would have helped . . "

The Ohio Senate passed 24-9 their version of the firarms lawsuit immunity bill (HB 192). The main difference: the House version applied the immunity retroactviely, meaning existing lawsuits would be shut down. The Senate version removed the retroactive provision. Read the Dispatch article here. or check out coverage with The Dayton Daily News. |

The new Senate Bill 130, which was introduced this week, is now available online in electronic format. (HTML). This bill is nearly identical to the poorly written HB274, introduced by Rep. Aslanides in the Ohio House. Although we have not reviewed the entire language of this Senate Bill we remain opposed to HB274 until many of the restrictions are fixed. We do not support a discretionary permit system. |

The Akron Beacon Journal has an interesting letter to the editors about the stabbings in Japan and how they related to gun control policies in the United States. Good read, half way down the page.

The Ohio Senate now has a piece of concealed carry legislation. [press release] Senate Bill 130 was introduced by Sen. Jordan and Wachtmann today in an effort to get the ball rolling in the senate. One major problem: This bill is probably identical to the letter in comparison to HB274.(pdf) For those of you not following the issue, every grass roots organization in Ohio is opposed to the language and various restrictions in HB274 (and quite likely SB130). It is these extreme restrictions, including the potential for this to become a discretionary permit, that make Rep. Aslanides, the Senators, and the NRA so sure their legislation will pass. Of course it would, it's gun control. If you support CCW reform and you support passing a good law the first time through (which may be the only opportunity we'll have) you really need to get involved, join the mailing lists, become a member, make a donation, and put your body where the activism is. Ironic quote of the week: “As I always say, ‘give them an inch and they take a mile,’ -- if we continue to allow the government to chip away at our right to bear arms, it won’t be long before we have no rights to speak of.” - Senator Lynn Wachtmann, after endorsing a CCW bill likely requiring fingerprints, a social security number, a 60 day state residency & 30 day county residency requirement, a 45 day waiting period, and the possibility that anti-gun Sheriff's have the means to deny 100% of applicants. go figure.

Our favorite liar, Toby Hoover, of the Coalition Against Gun Violence (yes, we know, inappropriately named) hosted a breakfast Monday to feed information (read: lies) to a group of clergy and law enforcement. You can bet good money this was a rally to bring troops to Columbus on Wednesday. Be sure to read about it in the Toledo Blade:
Law officers, clergy are primed on weapon bills. If you need some humor be sure to check out this amusing letter to the editors in the same paper:
Toledo Blade Letters (scroll to the very bottom). IMPORTANT NOTE: If there was any doubt in your mind about attending this Wednesday's hearings this news is even more reason to help us pack these rooms tight with PRO-CCW supporters. Scroll down for more detais.

URGENT: The Ohio House Civil & Commercial Law committee will meet at 9:30am Wednesday in room 114. House Bill 274 is on the agenda for proponent testimony, but rumor suggests only John Lott and the Buckeye State Sheriff's Association will be permitted to speak. Even if the public is permitted to speak, we ask that you attend this hearing and do not speak during a proponent hearing at all. The CCL committee will be refering this legislation to a subcommitttee which is being made up against traditional rules. The subcommittee hearing will be at 2:30pm the sme day in room 313, and we again encourage as many of you to attend either or both hearings. However: Please do not testify during any proponent hearings. HB274 language is very bad and every grass roots organization is going to send a message to the committee by attending, filling seats, and refusing to speaking during proponent hearings until the langage is fixed. One of the worst aspects of this legislation (HB274) is the ability for it to become a discretionary permit where it allows a Sheriff to petition a court for as many licenses as he wishes to dispute. An anti-gun Sheriff and Judge could therefor create a discretionary county. This is only one of the many things wrong with this legislation. Please help us overflow both of these meetings and find your seat 60 minutes before each meeting |

Althought the BSSA is responsible for a significant amount of the bad language in HB274, the Columbs Dispatch printed a nice editorial about their support: Sheriffs' backing proves value of concealed carry |
