This AP/Cleveland Live Story is rather scary. Perry County Ohio will only have one Sheriff on the road at any point in time during any shift. Budget cut backs caused significant layoffs in the County Sheriff's Office forcing may distinguished individuals to be demoted from Sgt. to Dispatcher! One of the best arguments in favor of self-defense and the right to carry firearms is the fact that the police "are never there when you need them" and they are not required to be by law. In most cases, you can't even hold them liable if they know you're in danger and fail to protect you. But imagine living in a county of 30,000 some people where there is only one Deputy Sheriff, period. Yikes! |

The New Mexico Gun Owners Forum has the news about the 44th state to offer some form of concealed carry. This legislation was originally going to be held up by the Speaker refusing to sign the bill. What caused it to pass? Intense grass roots activisim like that mentioned on the NMGO website: Rep. Russel sent an email to NMGOF to thank everyone for our work in getting CCW passed: ""Many, many thanks for all your help - you really helped to release it (the CCW bill) from the Speaker's office. I don't know if that would have happened without your members calling, faxing and e-mailing."Russel said in the email. "The Speaker had meltdown on his phone lines - they even called me to complain..."

From The Ohio News Network: A group of northeast Ohio Democrats have formed a new campaign group called BOB, or Bring Ohio Back. They intend to make it a statewide effort to oust Governor Bob Taft (R- Ohio) in 2002. So far, the BOB group includes 25 prominent Democrats from Toledo to Youngstown. They hope to raise enough money to hire at least one staff member. Wouldn't it be ironic if a Democrat running for Governor made a crystal clear promise to pass a right to carry bill his first year in office? Lets hope it doesn't get that far. |

Representative Jamie Callender has introduced House Bill 192 with thirty-one co-sponsors to stop the frivilous lawsuits against gun
manufactures originating in Ohio! If you're not familiar with this issue anti-gun cities (ie: mayors) and other politicians are using the resources of anti-gun groups and tax payer funds to sue the gun industry out of business or to "force" them to make guns with james bond technology. DATES: Sponsor testimony is today Wednesday April 4th at 10:00 before the Civil and Commercial Law committee. Proponent testimony (the first time you can speak) is April 25th, 2001 -- If you attend these hearings please wear an OFCC denim shirt! |

UPDATED: New Mexico CCW bill signed into law
The Sierra Times is reporting that New Mexico speaker of the house Ben Lujan is not going to sign the CCW bill before April 6. Apparently he must sign the bill before he sends it to the governor, and if the governor doesn't sign the bill by April 6 then the bill is essentially vetoed. |

We try really hard at OFCC to keep out of national or non-ccw issues, but it becomes increasingly hard to do. KeepAndBearArms.com is advocating a response to the FirstMonday "Dial and Demand" which is going to be put on tommorrow Monday, April 2. We need to do just the opposite of what they're doing. You can find their plans right here where you can find the telephone number you need to dial. -- Then, be sure to inform your U.S. Reps & Senators how you feel about this entire issue. It's time we start contributing to the numbers in Washington once in awhile.

OFCC Membership: Many of you may remember the 2000 spring meeting we had in Columbus. This year, things will be done differently. First, we're going to have a much more strict agenda. Second, we're going to mail that agenda to every member once we complete it! Third, we're going to try and accomplish more than just updating you on issues and talking this year. Ohioans For Concealed Carry today released a statement regarding the Cincinnati Ohio Police Chief Tom Streicher domestic violence restraining order. Based on The Lautenburg Act of 1996 which amended the Gun Control Act of 1968 Streicher may not own a firearm until he is found not guilty or charges are dropped.
