On Tuesday of last week the News Journal in Mansfield reported that 73 year old Robert Jarvis was shot in the head, bashed with a cinder block and eventually run over with a car. Fortunately he was able to fend off his attacker and will survive the ordeal.

From the story:
"He woke up in time to see his assailant shoot him," said Mansfield police Lt. John Wendling, adding the gun was a .22-caliber rifle. "He was shot in the head in the house, struggled with the guy, ended up outside the house, ended up smashed with some brick, and medical people believe he was run over.

"He must have really fought with him."

In another report from the News Journal, three teens were robbed at gun point at the home of Robert Jarvis' granddaughter Raquel Cole.

From that story:
Three teenagers visiting her house Wednesday afternoon were robbed of their cell phones at gunpoint. Early Monday, her grandfather was shot in the head, bashed with a cinder block and run over with a car.

"It's crazy," said Cole, who wasn't home at the time of the robbery. "I don't even feel safe here (Mansfield). I have a little girl (age 3). I don't want to feel like this."

"They actually came up and sat on the porch and talked with some of the kids. For whatever reason, they decided to do what they did."

Cole said she might do better out of Mansfield.

"There's so much going on," she said. "I don't want to live here anymore."
While the teenagers are too young for ccw, parents need to take responsible steps to protect their families. Moving from the area may be the best solution for these victims. However, the fact remains that crime and criminals are coming to our homes here in Ohio. Stories such as these are being told in the small towns as well as big cities throughout the state.

We have reported many times that the last line of defense lies with each and every one of us. The police and the justice system fail time and again to control criminals and protect our families. The majority of the time they are only around to clean up in the aftermath when the damage has already been done.

There are self defense tools available for Ohio residents. Over 50,000 people have taken the steps to obtain a concealed handgun license in the first year since the law was enacted. The numbers continue to grow.

Criminals such as these need to beware. Next time the person they pick on may be one of the people that have chosen to no longer be defenseless.

Are you waiting to be a victim?
