Commentary by Larry S. Moore, OFCC Senate District 10 Coordinator: WHIO-TV, Dayton, is reporting that the small town of Pleasant Hill, located in Miami County not far from Troy, has been forced to disband their police force after a levy defeat last May. The Miami County Sheriffs have assumed the duties of patrolling the town and now a formal agreement between the town and the Sheriffs Department has been signed. This is an unfortunate situation that continues to be played out across Ohio. The voters of the town have spoken and now must live with the results. I am not personally familiar with the Miami County Sheriff's office so I must assume they are very similar to other Sheriff offices around the state. OFCC does know that the Miami County Sheriff accepts CHL applications five days per week and appointments are necessary. The Sheriff Deputies no doubt have a lot of the county to cover. Many Sheriff's offices have also faced funding cuts forcing them to reduce staff, overtime, or new equipment purchases. They are often also being forced to do more with less. Citizens throughout Ohio should be coming to the realization that law enforcement is not around every corner for help. It is no longer practical to have that expectation of Ohio's law enforcement community given the budget constraints many departments face. This leaves Ohio citizens with an increasing need to provide their own self-defense. Have you obtained your CHL, taken advanced tactical training, practiced with your carry firearm, and have it with you daily? If so, you are among the best prepared Ohio citizens in the event of a crime. If not, will you wait until you become a victim to take action? Only you can protect yourself! |
