Commentary by Rick Jones, OFCC Senate District 14 Coordinator:

Be prepared...we've all heard that slogan before and it does have merit. Frequent break ins in residential areas make it a good reason to be prepared. Local police and a local security company are giving some good advice on how to help better protect your property with ideas such as dogs, deadbolt locks, alarm systems, outside lights, and reporting suspicious noises to the authorities.

The Marion Daily Star quotes Police Chief Bell as saying, "They're not looking for confrontation. They're just looking to steal money." Other recent reports by OFCC noted that burglars in the Dayton area are entering homes through unlocked doors while the residents are on the premise. The police are very concerned about a possible confrontation. There have been reports of home invasions turning violent because the burglars did not find enough money.

The intruders may not be looking for a confrontation but, what if you or someone in the house would accidentally confront them? Be prepared...follow the suggestions given, but also be prepared if a confrontation should occur. Dialing 911 is not a guarantee to your safety. The police departments do the very best they can when an emergency 911 call is received but are not required by law to protect each and every individual person, only the public in general.

The last and final step to home, family, and personal protection is the use of deadly force! This is a subject that is not and should not be taken lightly. If the threat of a personal attack during a break in is there, the only way to stop the threat would be the use of a firearm.

Take the training, learn how and when to use a firearm, apply for a concealed handgun license and protect yourself and your family. Remember, you and only you are responsible for your personal safety.
