Ohioans For Concealed Carry has learned that the Belmont County Sheriff's Office is sending letters to concealed handgun license holders demanding that they complete a one page document verifying their address, and asking if they still have their concealed handgun licenses.

Worse, the document states that you "MUST" complete this form because it is "a part of the requirements of having a CCW Permit."

If you live in Belmont County, or if you obtained your license from the Belmont County Sheriff's Office, you may have received this letter.

Ohioans For Concealed Carry has written a letter to the Belmont County Sheriff's office and the Belmont County Prosecutor's office asking them to clarify a few points, including:

  • What section of Ohio Revised Code authorizes a Sheriff or designee to demand or compel a concealed handgun licensee to supply this information annually, let alone at all?

  • What will the Belmont County Sheriff’s Office do if licensees fail to respond to these notices within the two-week time frame permitted in the letter?

  • If the Belmont County Sheriff’s Office intends to take action against licensees who fail to respond, what section of Ohio Revised Code authorizes that action by a County Sheriff?

  • How did the Belmont County Sheriff’s Office determine who to mail these notices to, and how does the Belmont County Sheriff’s office determine when to send these notices to license holders?

    These are all very important questions, since no Sheriff's Office has the authority to compel a license holder to supply this information once, let alone annually.

    Making up "rules" with the implication that a licensee may lose their license for failure to comply "within two weeks" raises ethical questions -- especially when the mandate is fictional.
