The Youngstown Vindicator reported yesterday that the Ohio House Criminal Justice Committee chairman, state Rep. Bob Latta, expects Jim Aslanides' CHL reform bill, HB 347, to receive its first hearing Nov. 15. Aslanides believes he has enough support to get his bill passed in the House, but has concerns about the Ohio Senate. It was the Senate that gutted his last few bills and forced many of the compromises in the bill which finally passed and was signed into law, HB 12. While Aslanides bill is certainly a major step forward, it does take a step backwards on a couple of issues, including a new block prohibiting legal resident aliens from obtaining a CHL for personal protection. OFCC will continue to work with the Ohio legislature to be sure your current rights are not lost in the rush to improve the current law. |
