Ohio gubernatorial candidate Ted Strickland made a campaign stop in Mansfield Sunday while courting the Democratic vote for the May primary. Throughout his campaign, Strickland has tried to present himself as a pro-gun candidate in an attempt to draw voters into his camp. However, his true feelings appeared to slip out and were recorded by the Mansfield News Journal: Strickland said he'd call people together to focus more on important issues and less on divisive matters such as stem cell research or whether citizens may carry concealed weapons. "There have been all sorts of issues that have been consuming our energies ... while important issues are neglected," he said. We have to strongly disagree with Strickland that the concealed carry issue is not an important use of our energies. Budget strategies and employment forecasts are of little comfort to a woman facing down a rapist standing at the foot of her bed. We hope that this is merely a case of Mr. Strickland being "politically correct" and saying what he thought the crowd wanted to hear and that it is not indicicative of the way he would conduct his office were he to win the highest seat in Ohio. |
