What If The Gun Grabbers Win? PDF Print E-mail

For years now, we at OFCC have been involved in the struggle to return rights to Ohio citizens. Not only the right to carry a concealed firearm for personal protection, but all the gun rights you are entitled to as a U.S. citizen.

We need only to look across the pond to see the consequences of the failure to act.

In 1999, British citizen Tony Martin made international headlines when he was arrested for shooting two burglars who had repeatedly robbed his home, wounding one and killing the other. Martin was sentenced to five years in prison for defending himself. He was released after 18 months.

Martin quickly became a symbol of all that was wrong with British gun laws which make it illegal to defend yourself with deadly force. Martin was the victim, yet spent more time in prison than the burglar who attacked him.

Now, another man is in trouble in Britain; this time for having the audacity to even think about defending himself.

Seventy-year-old strawberry farmer Eric Jarnet has been victimized many times by the criminal element, including burglary and vandalism on his farm in rural England.

Last week, after thieves stole hundred of yards of irrigation pipe, a theft that threatens to put his farm out of business, Jarnet commented that he might "do a Martin" and defend his livelihood.

Soon after, the British police showed up at his farm and confiscated his licensed shotgun. Jarnet committed no crime, he complied with the strict licensing laws in order to have a firearm for hunting, yet he is under scrutiny for even considering the possibility of fighting back.
"The thieves have all the rights in the world," said Jarnet. "Even if I had a dog here and he bit an intruder he would have to be put down.

"I gave up my gun voluntarily because there's no point in antagonising the police.

"I have had enough especially as it happened on my 70th birthday. I will go to America and then I can have my gun and a licence."

This is the kind of thing many of the gun grabbers would like to see here in America, a world where you have no right to defend yourself or your loved ones; a world where even thinking about doing so solicits a visit from the authorities.

When asked about the incident, Police spokesman Tim Wiseman said:
"If anyone is making these public comments then we have a duty to check them out. Firearms, particularly in West Berkshire, are a sensitive issue.

"Concerns were passed to police following comments Mr Jarnet made on a local radio station. Thames Valley Police have a duty to make sure that no risk exists.

"We obviously had to respond to this and a firearms inquiries officer went round, and Mr Jarnet surrendered his gun."

Yes, obviously this seventy year old farmer is a threat to society and must be rendered helpless. God forbid some criminal is injured or killed simply for plying his trade.

When you get to America, Eric, let me know. You can stay at my house for a while. Oh, and bring your shotgun. You have rights here.
