Ohio Senator Joy Padgett to Run for U.S. Congress PDF Print E-mail

A friend and political ally of Ohio firearm owners has been tapped by U.S. Congressman Bob Ney to replace him on this fall’s ballot after his decision to not seek re-election. The Columbus Dispatch is reporting that Senator Joy Padgett “happily agreed to run, calling it the fulfillment of a childhood dream.”

Senator Padgett has been an active supporter of Ohio’s movement to become a “Shall Issue CCW” state. She has sponsored Concealed Carry legislation in the Ohio Senate, including SB 252 (the Senate’s version of HB 347) which aims to enact statewide pre-emption and void the onerous “plain sight” requirement for vehicular carry.

Sen. Padgett and state GOP leaders are preparing for a special primary election to be scheduled by the Secretary of State for Ohio’s 18th Congressional District. James Lee, the spokesman for the Secretary of State explained that if Ney were to withdraw before August 19, a special election would be required in every county in the district to replace him on the ballot. If the official withdrawal occurs between August 19 and August 23, the GOP chairmen and central committee secretaries in the district’s counties will meet to name a replacement.
