Indiana CHL Holder Stops Robber Threatening to Kill PDF Print E-mail

The Indianapolis Star is reporting that a would-be robber is sitting in jail while a restaurant employee is sitting safely at home thanks to a law-abiding citizen licensed to carry a handgun.

William McMiller Jr., 40, attempted to rob a Kentucky Fried Chicken by approaching the cashier and threatening, “Give me the money before I shoot you.” McMiller then put his hand in his pocket as if reaching for a gun and readied himself to jump over the counter. Paul Sherlock and his Taurus 9mm handgun approached McMiller from behind. No further action was necessary as McMiller raised his hands and waited until the police arrived. Although a firearm was not found in his possession, he did have a long screwdriver capable of inflicting serious bodily harm and had given every possible indication that he had a gun, including threatening the deadly use of one.

This account adds to thousands upon thousands of incidents in which violent crime is prevented by a legal firearm that never fires a bullet. Experts also believe that for every report of armed self-defense that is reported, three times as many go undocumented.

If you happen to be someone that believes an armed populace is unnecessary, how do you think the parents of KFC cashier Deanne Slaughter feel? Would you want a CHL holder to step in and stop a criminal that’s threatening and preparing to murder your daughter?
