The office of the Ohio Attorney General, Jim Petro, has released statistics for the number of Concealed Handgun Licenses that were issued, suspended, and revoked during the second quarter of 2006. True to form, the demand continues to be consistent. Also consistent is the fact that CHL holders are overwhelmingly law-abiding. This fact is proven again and again by the very low number of licenses that have been suspended or revoked. Let's take a look at the numbers for this past quarter: 5489 Licenses were Issued 87 Licenses were Suspended 27 Licenses were Revoked Adding these numbers to previous tallies gathered since the law took effect in April of 2004 brings the current totals to: 79,019 Total Licenses have been Issued 478 Total Licenses have been Suspended 244 Total Licenses have been Revoked This means that less than one percent of all licenses have been suspended or revoked! To make these figures even more descriptive of the nature of an average CHL holder, one must understand possible reasons for a suspension or revocation. Has the licensee moved out of state? Revoked. Has he or she passed away? Revoked. Has there been a temporary protection order invoked (which is sometimes de facto for divorce proceedings)? Suspended. Also recall that more than half of the revocations attributed to the first quarter of 2006 were due to a Cleveland area instructor that short-changed his students on their mandatory live fire training requirements. The majority of those revoked licenses were quickly reinstated. The emotional and illogical cries of anti-gun advocates continue to flood Ohio's media outlets, town hall meetings, and living rooms. It's a shame when actual statistics get in the way of a good, factless rant. Perhaps someday those fighting against our overwhelmingly successful CCW laws will take the time to research its undoubted effectiveness. Ohioans For Concealed Carry applauds the 5500 individuals that chose to become legally equipped to protect themselves and their families over the last three months and looks forward to the continued growth of our community. |
