The Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife will be holding their annual Open Houses on Sunday, March 4 from noon to 3pm. One of the most frequent questions OFCC receives from hunters are regarding whether or not they can carry their concealed firearm while hunting. While it is generally permitted, there are a few circumstances when it is not. The most common to be encountered by most hunters is the prohibition while deer hunting. It is at these Open Houses that you have an opportunity to interact with ODNR officers and managers. This is the best opportunity for you to speak with these officials (particularly the managers) and convince them to change all hunting regulations prohibiting concealed carry. OFCC has had representatives at these Open Houses the last two years. The unfortunate truth is that the ODNR managers seem to believe that every CHL holder is a potential poacher and cannot be trusted to have their concealed firearm with them while hunting deer (whether during gun season, primitive weapons, or archery season). They must change this line of thinking, and that change can only come from hearing from hunters who are concerned about being all but disarmed while archery hunting or being required to leave their handgun in their vehicle where it is subject to theft. We encourage all hunters who would like to see these regulations changed to attend one of the five simultaneous Open Houses:
If you are unable to attend, you can still make your opinion heard by writing to any of the locations above and sending your letter in advance of the Open House date. Together, we can get these unfair restrictions removed and ensure hunters and trappers are treated no differently than any other Ohio citizen who chooses to carry a handgun for self-defense.
