One of the most frequent questions Ohioans For Concealed Carry receives asks whether or not someone can carry their concealed defensive handgun while hunting. While it is generally permitted, there are a few circumstances when it is not. The most common of these prohibitions exists while deer hunting. We ask for your help in petitioning the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) to abolish this prohibition and bring Ohio's hunting policies in line with state law. At the bottom of this article, you will find a link to a letter. If all concealed carry supporters could take a few seconds to print this letter, sign it, and mail it to the ODNR Director listed at the top of the letter, we may continue to see our grassroots efforts create positive change in Ohio. If you are able to make a stronger statement, you have the opportunity to hand deliver the letter to ODNR representatives on March 4. As you have previously read in this story by Dan White, ODNR is holding Open Houses across the state on that date. OFCC has had representatives at these Open Houses the last two years and volunteers will be in attendace again. The unfortunate truth is that the ODNR managers seem to believe that every CHL holder is a potential poacher and cannot be trusted to have their concealed firearm with them while hunting deer (whether during gun season, primitive weapons, or archery season). They must change their line of thinking, and that change can only come from hearing from hunters who are concerned about being all but disarmed while archery hunting or being required to leave their handgun in their vehicle where it is subject to theft. Ohio's CCW laws need those of you who can attend these hearings to visit, express your concerns, and hand deliver the letter we've drafted (or one of your own). The letter can be printed by clicking HERE. All ODNR Open Houses will be held from Noon - 3:00PM. The various locations are given below:
Together, we can get these unfair restrictions removed and ensure hunters and trappers are treated no differently than any other Ohio citizen who chooses to carry a handgun for self-defense. Click here for more information |
