Anti-Gun Republicans Can Not Win in '08 PDF Print E-mail

In my own humble opinion, and in the opinion of many smarter than me, the Republican Party absolutely can not win with Rudy Giuliani (or any other anti-gun candidate) as their man in 2008. The GOP needs to re-evaluate what true Conservatives want and run as fast as they can from the mistakes that have been made recently by Republicans in increasing the size and spending of the government to unprecedented levels, skirting the Constitution and the protections that lie therein, and thinking they should be legislating morality.

Instead of returning to the ideals set forth in the Constitution and their "Contract with America" that led them to sweeping victories in the 1990's, they apparently want to offer up middle-of-the road candidates that have a watered down view of what made America the greatest nation in the history of the world. That strategy will never work. The GOP will never draw enough liberal-leaning voters to their side to make up for everyone (like me) that simply can't vote for a non-Conservative Republican.

It is almost universally recognized that Clinton's so-called Assault Weapons Ban and other gun control measures significantly helped the Republicans re-gain power in Washington. Al Gore himself is on record saying that he believes gun owners and the NRA defeated him in 2000. This is why I believe you won't hear much from the Democrats on the third rail issue of gun control until after the Presidential election. Fear not though... once that election has come and gone, we will once again be inundated with anti-gun legislative proposals at both the State and Federal level. That is why it is imperative to have a pro-gun President elected in 2008 that has the will to stand up for the Bill of Rights and our Second Amendment freedoms.

I admit that I am not a sole one-issue voter. I look at more in a candidate's platform and their history than just firearm rights. However, an individual's position on gun control is an excellent litmus test for discerning their position on several other key issues.

Below you will find a (somewhat crude) video of Rudy Giuliani spewing forth utter foolishness in saying that:
“The single biggest connection between violent crime and an increase in violent crime is the presence of guns in your society . . . . the more guns you take out of society, the more you are going to reduce murder. The less guns you take out of society, the more it is going to go up.”
Statistics have proven time and time again that this isn't true. If this were a fact, then why has Washington, DC been the murder capital of the world even though they have enacted a complete and total handgun ban (at least until a couple weeks ago)?

Sorry Mayor Giuliani, I realize that you have said "I understand the Second Amendment... my policies never affected hunters." That bit of misdirection has not fooled me or anyone else that doesn't already have anti-gun tendencies.

I truly hope that the GOP will listen to all of us, take stock of where they are, and realize what is needed to win back the support of the American public. I fear that if Rudy Giuliani is anointed as the Republican candidate for President, he will be joining Al Gore in saying "I might have won if it weren't for firearm owners and their ability to read and understand the Bill of Rights."
