The Cleveland Plain Dealer has an editorial on a firearms pre-emption languaged introduced in the General Assembly. The idea is to prevent local governments from making laws which are a slap in the face to state laws, but the Cleveland Plain Dealer has their liberal gun control goggles on for this one...Shaky aim |

Ladies & Gentlemen, the time has come again. House Bill 274 is scheduled for proponent testimony before a special sub-committee of the civil & commercial law committee this Wednesday at 2:30pm in room 313. If the House Session runs beyond 2:30pm the meeting will be immediately after session. Last week's hearing was cancelled due to a rather active session. The Scoop: Please attend this hearing and bring as many people as you can with you. However, we respectfully request that you simply not speak before the committee. Ohioans For Concealed Carry, in a united effort with every other grass roots, Ohio based, gun rights organizations is opposed to various items in the language of House Bill 274. We are making a statement by refusing to speak in support of this legislation until they resolve the problems in the bill. By attending this hearing, sitting in a seat, and simply refusing to speak your "statement" will have more than twice the impact. We intend to dispute the issues of HB274 during opponent testimony and hope you will join us then as well. |

The National Rifle Association is the only gun rights organization supporting HB274, a restrictive permit based right to carry reform package. You can download the legislation in pdf form right here if you'd like to read it yourself. On Wednesday, June 20th, 2001 there will be an additional hearing on HB274 for proponents. In a move which has united every single grassroots gun rights organization in Ohio we are asking you to attend this hearing, but refuse to speak. Do not fill out a testimony slip, just take notes and fill a seat. We do not support HB274 in it's introduced form and we are pushing the sub-committee to reform the bill. We will be speaking (and we encourage you to speak) at opponent and "interested party" hearings. By speaking at a proponent hearing you are making a statement of support even though you, like us, probably don't support the language in HB274. The meeting will be in room 313 at 2:30pm or immediately after session in the House, please arrive early. |

The new Senate Bill 130, which was introduced this week, is now available online in electronic format. (HTML). This bill is nearly identical to the poorly written HB274, introduced by Rep. Aslanides in the Ohio House. Although we have not reviewed the entire language of this Senate Bill we remain opposed to HB274 until many of the restrictions are fixed. We do not support a discretionary permit system. |
